What Is Your Talent, Weakness and Desired Gift?
March 4, 2010
This is the question I asked on the last call because it is important to understand who we are and how we have changed over the years. What is important to us in our twenties, changes in our thirties and so forth. However, there are some things that never change.
What is your talent?
My talent is writing.
What is your weakness?
My weakness is sweets.
What is your desired gift?
I want to develop the gift of reaching out boldly to people who are perceived as untouchable.
I have had a wonderful journey of discovery over the last few years and the more I analyze what I enjoy doing. On the last conference call we discussed what we want to be when we grow up and this is a portion of the transcript. Hope you get something out of it. Feel free to respond.
What do you what to be when I grow up?
Greeting:
Hello Divas! I am Candi your host tonight and I am here to discuss the topic of “what do you wanna be when you grow up?”
Now that I am 39 I have been through the first half of my life, therefore I have had the opportunity to observe people from the age of 0-40 through both a subjective and objective lens
From this advantage I have discovered that many of us will do several things in our lifetime before we actually decide what it is that we want to do. For example, I am a cosmetologist of over 20 years! I owned 2 salons and decided at 33 that I wanted to go back to college and have been on the academic path every since. Now what appealed to me about doing hair was that:
- I was able to be creative
- I was able to be my own boss
- I was able to meet lots of people
- I provided a service that made people feel good
- I loved learning new things
At 33 I went to college and decided that I loved :
- (Bridge to previous) Learning new things
- Sharing information with others
- Providing a service that solved problems
- Wouldn’t mind working for someone else if I loved the job (fat chance)
- Better at showing people how to do things than doing them myself.
What have I always loved to do that has nothing to do with work or school?
- Write
- Speak
- All other forms of communication…ie Bachelors degree in Communication Studies
- Wrote book to heal not sell.
- Love to see kids become independent
- Love relationships based on interdependency
I’m going to ask you to do what I just did. I want each of you to think of two things be it jobs, school or a combination of both, name 5 things that you loved about each. Not the job per say but the things they allowed you to do. Remember we are talking more about what you like to do first, rather than the job it self. For example, my father is a retired mail man. I thought delivering mail was the most boring thing, so I asked him, why do you like delivering mail and his answer was because:
- I like being outside
- I like meeting new people
- I always get cool gifts during the holidays (build meaningful relationships)
The next call will be “Cool Ideas That Will Get You Out of a Rut and Into Rewards.”
The call following will be “The Power of Togetherness Among Women.”
